“The Human Side of Psychotherapists.” It will be discuss some of the main research findings presented in my recent (2022) book, How Psychotherapists Live: The Personal Self and Private Life of Professional Healers.

Description

In addition to ‘personal self’ and ‘private life’ mentioned in the subtitle, the keynote will include topics like: therapists’ family backgrounds; the experiences that they carry forward from childhood; the extent and variety their religious and spiritual experiences; the reasons for their frequent use of personal therapy; and the different ways this ‘human side’ of psychotherapists influences their approach to therapeutic work (as distinct from the ‘professional side’ such as training, theory, and technique).

Short Bio

David E. Orlinsky was born in June 1936 in New York, NY. He earned his BA and PhD from The University of Chicago. His academic career spans over five decades at The University of Chicago, where he served as a Lecturer to Professor in the Department of Comparative Human Development and the Collegiate Division of Social Sciences from 1960 to 2012. He is currently a Professor Emeritus.

In addition to his tenure at The University of Chicago, he was a Senior Research Scientist at the Illinois Institute for Juvenile Research, part of the State Department of Mental Health, from 1964 to 1977. He has held numerous visiting appointments at esteemed institutions worldwide, including the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, the University of Ulm in Germany, the Institute of Psychology at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the University of Oslo in Norway, the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and both the University of Chile and the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. Clinically, Dr. Orlinsky was a licensed psychologist in Illinois from 1965 to 2005. His clinical roles included being a U.S. Public Health Service Fellow in Clinical Psychology, a Staff Psychotherapist at the Katharine Wright Mental Health Clinic in Chicago, a consultant supervisor of psychotherapy at Illinois Masonic Hospital, and running a private practice in Chicago from 1965 to 2012. His publications include significant works such as "Varieties of Psychotherapeutic Experience" (1975), "How Psychotherapists Develop" (2005), and "How Psychotherapists Live: The Personal Self and Private Life" (2022). He has also contributed to multiple editions of the "Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change" and authored numerous book chapters and journal articles. Throughout his career, Dr. Orlinsky has been honored with several prestigious awards, such as the Sigmund Freud Award for Psychotherapy (2015), the Life Time Contribution Award from the Society for Psychotherapy Research (2013), and an honorary doctorate from the University of Oslo (2011), among others. He is a founding member of the Society for Psychotherapy Research and has served in various leadership roles, including President and Chair of several committees. Additionally, he co-founded the SPR Collaborative Research Network and has been actively involved in the American Academy of Psychotherapists. Dr. Orlinsky's work and contributions to the field of psychotherapy research and practice have been documented in the chapter “David E. Orlinsky: Developing Psychotherapy Research, Researching Psychotherapist Development” in the book "Bringing Psychotherapy Research to Life" (2010).
