Keynote Topic

Person-Centered supervision: are Rogers’ conditions (still) necessary and sufficient?

Description

Rogers used to see supervision as the “therapy of the therapist”. A place where to check how the therapist is in the therapeutic relationship, how he/she is experiencing the conditions of congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathic understanding, and the impact it has within the relationship. Seen in this way, person-centered supervision is a specific model, primarily focused on the therapist’s engagement to provide the psychological climate that will support the client’s self-exploration. This perspective differs from the main use of supervision in therapy, which is more centered on the therapeutic situation presented, seen from an “expert” point of view. It respects the fundamental principles of the person-centered approach, both philosophically and practically.

This workshop looks at the relevance of this model in the 21st century from three different and complementary perspectives:

  • Place and role of the Client-Centered Therapist: what are we here for?
  • Demonstration of a supervision session with a participant
  • Common discussion and reflection

Through and beyond supervision, we will explore key issues and challenges of person-centered therapy and how it works.

A willingness to actively participate is assumed, and a volunteer is needed for the supervision session. Confidentiality is also required, as a way to create a safe environment for all the participants
